CHESS PIECE MOVEMENTS

1.PAWNS

They may seem powerless, but they are very useful at the end of the games. They can move only forward by one square except when making the first move and when they are capturing any other piece. But once they reach the other side of the board they can be promoted to any other pieces other than the king.

In their very first move they can move forward two squares and there after just one square. They can also move one square forward  diagonally while capturing other pieces.

EN PASSANT : It is a move that can be used by pawns when the opponent's pawn jumps  two squares across our pawn, then we can capture that piece by moving one square diagonally to enter into the path of opponent's pawn.

 2. ROOKS

The rooks are considered as the most power pieces after the queen. They can move any number of squares to all four direction but they cannot move diagonally in any cases.

The main use of a rook is in the end game that it can take control of an entire row and column so that it can restrict the entry of opponent's King or pawns to that row or column.

The rook along with the king can be used to play the special move called 'Castling'.

3.KNIGHTS

This horse headed piece in the chessboard is the only piece which is capable of jumping over the other pieces (except the rook & king while castling). They move four squares to any direction in an 'L' shape. They are always a threat to the king as a check from the knights cannot be blocked by anything, the king has to be shifted from its square.

It has got a unique movement. This is the only type of movement that the queen is not capable of doing. All other piece's way of movement can be done with the queen. Though the knights cannot move a long distance, they can possess threat to the eight squares around it.

4.BISHOPS

There will be two bishops in a chessboard, one right next to the king and the other very next to the queen. They can move any number of squares but only diagonally.

They are the only pieces in the chessboard who are not capable of changing the color of squares through which they move. That means, a white bishop can move only through white squares and a black bishop through black squares only.

5.QUEEN

The queen is considered as the most powerful piece in a chessboard. They can move any number of squares in any direction but do not have the ability to jump over the other pieces.

Losing the queen so early in the game gives the opponent a greater chance of winning the game. So the queen must be used wisely.

6.KING

The king piece is the most important piece in the chessboard. If the king is in a check and it has no squares to move, then the game is over (checkmate). So it has to be kept in a safe position.

The king can move to all directions like a queen, but only      one square (but while castling it can move two squares and can jump over the rook too). Though the king is powerless in the opening game, they gain power at the end game, especially when there are only two kings and pawns left in the board.
